Why Is Hymenoplasty Performed?

Gynecologist Dr. Korkut Arslan

Why Is Hymenoplasty Performed?

In some cultures, men may not accept that their partner has had sexual intercourse before marriage. Due to this pressure, women who have previously had sexual intercourse or those with a naturally elastic hymen may seek a solution. Hymenoplasty is performed to reconstruct a membrane that mimics the original hymen using the patient’s own tissue.

Why Is Hymenoplasty Performed?

If the hymen was torn due to prior sexual activity or is naturally elastic and unlikely to bleed during first intercourse, a surgical reconstruction is done at the entrance of the vagina. This may involve temporary stitches or a permanent technique (known as the flap method) to recreate a membrane resembling the original, vascular hymen tissue.

As a result, whenever the first intercourse occurs after the procedure—regardless of the technique used—a hymenal bleeding similar to that of a first-time sexual experience typically occurs when the reconstructed tissue is penetrated.

Women who have had a torn hymen due to intercourse or other reasons—or who were born without one—may choose hymenoplasty not only to produce hymenal bleeding during planned intercourse but also for psychological relief. This procedure often helps ease feelings of guilt caused by societal pressure and helps restore self-confidence.

Failure of Hymenoplasty

Failure in hymenoplasty is typically associated with the permanent method. In temporary procedures, since stitches are meant to be torn within a few days during intercourse, failure is rare. However, premature rupture may occur if the stitches are disrupted by trauma to the area or movements such as wide leg stretches before intercourse.

Failure of Hymenoplasty

For permanent hymenoplasty, several factors may lead to failure: poor tissue healing, infections, bleeding, constant moisture in the genital area, engaging in sports that require leg stretching, swimming before full recovery, or exposure to sauna, baths, or hot tubs.

For successful healing after permanent hymenoplasty, it is crucial that the patient follows post-operative care during the first month, including:

  • Regularly perform the dressings recommended by the doctor
  • Pay close attention to genital hygiene
  • Avoid intense exercises or sports that require leg stretching
  • Avoid activities like horseback or bicycle riding that may cause trauma to the genital area
  • Refrain from swimming in pools or the sea
  • Avoid using saunas, Turkish baths, or bathtubs that can excessively moisten the genital area

To ensure the success of the permanent hymenoplasty, we offer a free follow-up examination at the end of the first month. If any issues have developed during the healing period, they are identified and treated during this visit.

frequently asked questions

Yes, the hymen can be repaired using two different methods called temporary hymen repair and permanent hymen repair. After hymen repair performed with either method, bleeding will occur during the first sexual intercourse as the penis forces the vaginal entrance, causing the repaired area to tear.
Any woman over the age of 18 who has had sexual intercourse that she did not consent to or later regretted can voluntarily undergo hymen repair.
Bleeding will definitely occur with hymen repair performed by an experienced specialist physician. After thousands of hymen repair surgeries performed by Gyn. Op. Dr. Korkut Arslan to date, all his patients experienced bleeding during intercourse. Choosing the right doctor is therefore very important for ensuring bleeding occurs during intercourse.
Permanent hymen repair performed with the flap technique cannot be detected by the naked eye or any medical imaging method (MRI, ultrasound, etc.), but it can be understood if examined by a specialist doctor.
Hymen repair is not something that can be felt during intercourse, and since it cannot be seen visually either, your partner will not notice this situation.
In the temporary method, stitches are placed in the area where the hymen was torn during previous sexual intercourse. The aim here is to ensure that the stitches tear and cause bleeding when forced by the penis during the subsequent sexual intercourse. This method should be performed a few days before the planned intercourse, and utmost care must be taken to ensure the stitches do not open until intercourse occurs. In the permanent method, the area where the hymen is located is reconstructed using an aesthetic surgery technique. There is no need to plan according to the timing of the subsequent intercourse; bleeding will occur regardless of how long after the procedure intercourse takes place.
With the latest generation laser device used for hymen repair, the operation time is shortened, the treated area heals faster, and complications such as infection, pain, etc., that may occur after the operation are minimized. Therefore, the patient's comfort during and after the procedure is at the highest possible level. Additionally, due to the high quality of the procedure performed with laser, the success rate in achieving the expected result is also very high.
Yes, with state-of-the-art laser devices, both hymen repair and vaginal tightening can be performed in the same session. Even with temporary hymen repair, which can only be done a few days before the desired intercourse for bleeding, vaginal tightening can now be performed in the same session. If surgical vaginal tightening is performed during temporary hymen repair, and considering the procedure needs to be done just a few days before intercourse, this short period will not be sufficient for the surgically tightened area to heal and the stitches to dissolve. As a result, during intercourse, your partner will feel the stitches, and there will be a risk of excessive bleeding. Therefore, while vaginal tightening was not performed during temporary hymen repair before laser technology, with today's laser technology, tightening can be done without surgical intervention during temporary hymen repair in a 15-20 minute application, and our patients can immediately return to their normal daily lives.
Temporary hymen repair takes 10-15 minutes, while permanent hymen repair takes 15-20 minutes. If the procedure is performed with a laser, these times are slightly reduced for both methods.
Hymen repair can be performed by gynecologist surgeons and plastic surgeons. Hygienic and sterile office conditions are sufficient for the operation.
Local anesthesia is sufficient during hymen repair surgery to ensure the patient does not feel pain and is comfortable. General anesthesia can also be preferred depending on preference or need.
The patient can return to daily life immediately after hymen repair. A minimal stinging and pain sensation may occur for a short period after the procedure, for which taking a pain reliever will be sufficient. The main point to consider here is that the doctor's recommendations must be followed during the one-week period to achieve the expected result from the operation.
During the first week after the operation, the patient must adhere to the care recommended by the physician. During this period, prescribed medications should be used regularly, and the explained dressing should also be applied regularly. Also, during this one-week period, the patient should not swim in pools or the sea, and should avoid sports and movements that require excessive leg spreading.
Hymen repair is ultimately a surgical operation, and it is natural for complications such as mild bleeding, infection, and pain, which are likely in such operations, to occur. However, these complications are not severe enough to affect the patient's daily life and comfort. If the medications recommended by the physician are used regularly and the suggested care is followed, no problems will be experienced.
